Professor Peter Shah

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Professor Peter Shah is a Supra-regional Glaucoma Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), visiting Professor at University College London and an Honorary Professor of Glaucoma at the Centre for Health & Social Care Improvement (University of Wolverhampton). He is an international leader in glaucoma / “only eye” and complex anterior segment surgery, and has written 5 textbooks and authored over 150 publications. Pete is the Chair-Elect of the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society and a sitting member of the Professional Standards Committee and British Ophthalmic Surveillance Unit at the Royal College Of Ophthalmologists.

Pete is Past-President of the British Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society, Past-Secretary of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress and a past member of the Education Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He founded the Midlands Glaucoma Society and is a Past-chair of the British Eye Study Group.

He is the Co-Founder / Director of the Birmingham Institute for Glaucoma Research (Institute of Translational Medicine, UHB). Pete leads the ReGAE (Research into Glaucoma And Ethnicity) project, aiming to help eliminate glaucoma blindness.

Professor Shah has previously been Glaucoma Section Editor for “Eye”, is Co-Editor of ‘Ophthalmic Anaesthesia’ and the ‘International Ophthalmology Portal’.

Pete is committed to mentoring – training over 35 national / international Glaucoma Fellows. He works with a charitable team supporting surgeons through “Sight for East Africa” and is Co-Investigator on the KiGIP (Kilimanjaro Glaucoma Intervention Program) team assessing medical vs SLT laser treatment in a RCT. Peter has spear-headed the Royal College of Ophthalmologists program for Foundation Doctors and Newly-appointed Consultants. He is the founder of the “Consultant Survival Skills” courses. He has developed wet-lab simulation for glaucoma surgery and runs the Birmingham Trabeculectomy Wet-lab Academy.

In his charitable work Professor Shah supports “Sight for East Africa” and “Sight for All”.
